Four people died on the spot when two ambulance vehicles and a truck were involved in a crash early Wednesday morning along the R721 highway.
It is believed that at around 0450Hrs a high care ambulance overturned between Kroonstad and Vredefort. Two members of the public then tried to direct traffic but an approaching Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance came crashing into the overturned vehicle and knocked down one of the volunteer traffic controllers before colliding head-on with an oncoming truck.
Four people were pronounced dead on the scene while another five were critically injured. Two sustained minor injuries while one person escaped unscathed from the horror accident.
Free State MEC for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, expressed condolences to the affected by road crash.
“Once again one road incident has affected many households. Breadwinners were killed or sustained life-altering injuries and a number of families have been affected by a single road crash. This is very sad indeed. I hereby wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost a loved one and I pray that those who were injured will recover fully,” Mashinini said.
The Free State Province is working hard to minimize road fatalities on the roads in support of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2020 and the government is calling upon all stakeholders to participate in this endeavour.
“We to appeal to all drivers to do their best to stay alert on the road and avoid all distractions while driving,” the MEC urged.
The department also warned all drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists to adhere to the rules of the road as road safety depends on each individual road user.
