Legendary Zimbabwean musician, Oliver Mtukudzi, has died. Tuku, as his legion of fans affectionately called him, passed on at around 1400Hrs on Wednesday (23 Jan) at Avenues Clinic, a private hospital in Harare after suffering from heart complications since December last year.
He was 66.
A true musical genius whose works transcended borders, race and language, Tuku’s down-to-earth approach endeared him to his fans. He was also the UN Goodwill Ambassador for Southern African in addition to being a businessman, a human rights activist and a philanthropist.
Ironically, Tuku died on the same day as his friend and South African music star, Hugh Masekela, who died in 2018.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy, and children.
