Kaizer Chiefs finally produced a performance worthy smiling about for their legion of fans when they burst Benni McCarthy’s burst in a Premier League match played at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night.
Two second half goals from ageless linkman, Sphiwe Tshabalala and 17year old debutant, Wiseman Meyiwa, saw Cape Town City’s five match winning streak come to a screeching halt on a night when the McCarthy-coached side could have leapfrogged Maritzburg United to the summit of the log, had they won the match.
It was a night worth remembering on many fronts. Not only did Meyiwa show wisdom on the pitch to become the youngest PSL player to score on debut, but he also brought relief to coach, Steve Khompela, who has been facing a barrage of criticism for a stuttering start to the season.
The game also proved that there is life for the Soweto giants in the absence of injured defence stalwarts, Ramahle Mphahlele and Tshepo Masilela as well as suspended Eric Mathoho.
Itumeleng Khune also took the opportunity to underline why he is still the best between the sticks when he made vital saves to deny the hosts from scoring.
Chiefs are now 9th on the log with 4 points from three matches.
